Leader: Most of these sessions are approximately two hours. There is more that should be covered in the first session than can be covered in 120 minutes. Hence, that session is longer than the others.
The strength of this format is that you have the maximum amount of time to have couples work on homework (over six weeks). The weakness of this format is that attendance may vary from week to week

The homework for these sessions is straightforward.
Read Ahead of Sessions Model: If you plan to have them receive one of the books prior to the start of the first session, you can begin a model of having them read the chapters for each session prior to those sessions. Then, you can assign the exercises from the back of the chapters for the next week.
Read After Sessions Model: If they will receive the book at the first session, then you can ask them to read the chapters following sessions. They can do the exercises for each as they go.
No Time to Read Model: If you are working with couples that you do not believe will have the time right now to do much reading, assign the exercises at the end of the chapters as homework, without pressing as much for reading-favoring practice and thinking over reading. Of course, they will have the book to refer to and review with in the future. |
