PREP & Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a very complicated and difficult topic. Not all people agree on various issues of strategy related to marriage education and domestic violence. We cannot offer advice on such things for anyone's specific situation or program context. However, we have written several things that may be of use for you to consider as you contemplate your strategies for understanding and dealing with this issue in your work. ACF plans technical assistance on various levels of sites on this subject (and we have been involved in various discussion about those plans as well). Note that the ACF proposals much include a statement from you about how you will collaborate with domestic violence services in your area. It is also very important for you to know your local and state laws and guidelines about violence affecting adults and children.

These links do not address that subject as much as they are summary statements by us about three important matters:

(1) PREP as a curriculum related to domestic violence issues.

(2) A quick summary overview by Scott Stanley at the University of Denver about research on types of domestic violence.

(3) The generic referral document strategy we developed on conjunction with the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative that we think is a wise part of an overall set of strategies to make sure everyone attending marriage education leaves with more information than they had coming in about various crucial services—but done in such a way that the information can be handed out to everyone without singling anyone out.
